In this CFB preview for Week 11 of the 2025 season, we ask: Will there be any more SEC coaches to hit the bricks before this year is over?
After Auburn tossed out Hugh Freeze in the midst of his third season, he became the fourth SEC coach to get fired in 2025. Sam Pittman (Arkansas), Billy Napier (Florida), and Brian Kelly (LSU) were all shown the exit before Freeze. It does make you wonder if he will be the last. Mid-season firings do happen, but for this many to happen before we have even gotten into the final stretch of the season feels odd.
When you look at this season as a whole, 13 coaches have been fired mid-year as of November 5. In 2024, only three coaches had been fired in between Week 0 and Week 11. One was fired prior to the start of the season. Therefore, if it feels like a lot of coaches are getting canned this year, it’s not just you.
Nevertheless, we must look forward and never backward. There are still plenty of teams that have not fired their coach, and some of them will contend for the title.
CFB Preview Week 11: CFP Rankings
The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2025 season were released on Tuesday, November 3. If you have YouTube TV, you did not see it for reasons of which you are aware.
No surprise, Ohio State was number 1. They are going to be the top team in college football until someone beats them. This may or may not ever happen.
Also not surprisingly, Indiana sits at number two while Texas A&M is number three. Indiana would be a projected at-large bid, while A&M could well be the SEC champion.
The races for those automatic bids should be good, and for the ACC, it’s fortunate that they get a bid. They do not have any teams in the top 12 – Virginia is the closest at 14. As for the Group of 5, they also do not have a team ranked at all, but we can presume Memphis is the favorite there.
CFB Preview Week 11: Featured Games of the Week
We had to dig through the games to find four we wanted to discuss. It’s not the best slate, that’s for sure. It would have been made better if LSU were good, but they have lots of problems to address. Some of them would appear to be of their own making.
- Tulane at Memphis. We just mentioned them as the likely team to beat for the Group of 5 automatic bid to the playoff. Tulane was a team that had been an early contender. If they still want to be, they have to beat the Tigers on the road.
- BYU at Texas Tech. This could be the game of the week, at least if you look at the rankings which have them both in the top 10. Will the Texas Tech high-powered offense, which has served them well, be too much for BYU to handle this time?
- Texas A&M at Missouri. The Aggies have been one of the nation’s best teams, but haven’t gotten the attention of some of the other premier contenders. They are going about their business, but they have a tough task against another ranked team on the road.
- Oregon at Iowa. The CFP rankings have Iowa in the top 25. This is going to be a major test for them. Their defense against the Oregon offense is going to be a battle all day long.
CFB Number of the Week
7. This is the number of wins Florida State and Clemson combine for this season. Neither one of these teams being any good is part of the reason why this week’s slate is more of a dud than it should be.
