A team celebrated in the Bronx on Wednesday night, but it was not the Yankees, as Toronto wins the ALDS.
Following a thrilling comeback in Game 3 on Tuesday, the Yankees put forth a flat performance in Game 4. While they did not get blown out like they did in the first two games of the series, the Yankees had a few people believing after Tuesday that they had turned the corner. A sudden offensive explosion and a five-run comeback will do that. However, Toronto wanted it more the entire series and it showed.
Toronto Wins ALDS: Game 4
The final score was 5-2 Blue Jays, with Canada’s only major-league team making the ALCS for the first time since 2016. Meanwhile, for the Yankees, it means they will not defend their American League title from a year ago.
The Yankees started Cam Schlittler, the hero from the Wild Card series against Boston, while Toronto had an opener and a bullpen game. One would imagine that the Yankees were favored in this situation at home, and that one would be incorrect.
The Jays struck in the first inning with several hits that landed on or close to the foul lines on either side. Fortunate placement of batted balls was a major factor in that early run for Toronto.
For the Yankees, their first run came in the third inning, as the nine hitter, Ryan McMahon (of all people), homered to right to tie the game. It remained tied for at least a little while.
Toronto retook the lead in the fifth after some additional timely hitting. However, the game was truly over in the 7th: Still down 2-1, a Yankees team that had been playing more inspired defense the whole night until that point suffered a calamity. Jazz Chisholm booted a likely double-play ball, and Toronto would eventually extend their lead to 4-1. They would later make it 5-1, but at that point, who cares. The Yankees clawed another run back but again, who cares.
2025 New York Yankees: Post-Mortem
There will be plenty of time to do an autopsy on the Yankees’ 2025 season. The key points of it will be as follows:
- This team had too many stretches of poor play throughout the season; they would have won the division and perhaps exacted a different outcome had they not.
- The Yankee offense, for all of its talent, went too cold too many times. This time, they squandered what was a pretty good postseason by Judge, however brief it was.
- Neither Aaron Boone nor Brian Cashman will face any consequences for this early exit from the postseason.
- A name you will hear in regards to being off of the team next year is Anthony Volpe, but he is not the only one.
A Horrible Yankee ALDS Comes to an End
This will be a series to forget for the Yanks, as they are now heading to the golf course and Toronto has a chance at the World Series. The first two games, lopsided losses on the road in Canada, set a negative tone from which the team never truly recovered.
