College Football: CFB Week 7 Preview, 2025

In the CFB Week 7 preview, rocketing through this 2025 college football season, we ask this: Who stinks?

When you have 136 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision (or FBS), there are going to be winners and losers; haves and have-nots. Some of the losers or disappointing teams are a bit unexpected, as is always the case, but others who are plumbing the depths of Division I were very much forecasted to be there.

As we do every week, we featured four key games on the schedule out of over 50 which will occur.

CFB Week 7 Preview: Featured Games

This week, the contests we looked at are:

  • USC at Illinois (Big Ten conference game)
  • Indiana at Oregon (Big Ten conference game)
  • Oklahoma vs. Texas (SEC conference game; the “Red River Rivalry”)
  • BYU at Arizona (Big 12 conference game)

The big one on the schedule is likely Indiana at Oregon, the only top-ten matchup here. Oklahoma-Texas might have been one itself, but Texas is one of those teams that bombed last week and took a serious tumble.

Who Flopped in Week 6?

There are two clear and distinct answers to this question: Penn State and the aforementioned Texas.

Texas first: They lost to Florida in a middling game by Arch Manning, but one in which the defense let a very shaky Florida offense do some things against the Horns that they hadn’t done against anyone else. The Gators got themselves a nice win, but this was one Texas was expected to win, and they fell flat again.

As for Penn State, what the Nittany Lions was far worse than what Texas did. They lost on the road to UCLA, a winless team that had already fired its coach a few weeks into the season. The Bruins were arguably the worst team in a power conference up until last weekend, while Penn State was trying to recover from a bitter loss to Oregon. They went from contender to pretender in about two weeks.

CFB Week 7 Preview: Team Rankings

At Bracket Yard, we have our CFB136 rankings, where we rank each team every week and let you know where they all stand relative to each other. You can view those rankings here. They are typically updated no later than Monday each week.
