The NYY wild card round did not start off great, but it certainly ended that way as the Yankees eliminated the Boston Red Sox.
Behind one of the more brilliant pitching performances that you might see in the entire 2025 postseason, the Yankees defeated Boston in the decisive Game 3, 4-0, and won the series two games to one.
There is a lot for Yankees fans to be happy about with this win, while for their rivals from Boston, it will be a long offseason full of wonder as to how far they could have truly gone. Following the first game and their own brilliant pitching performance by Garrett Crochet, they were perhaps feeling like they had the Yankees on the ropes. However, it was not to be, as the Yanks fought back.
NYY Wild Card Postgame: Cam the Man
Yankees rookie starting pitcher Cam Schlittler made his Major League debut over the summer. Who could have imagined that by October, he would be pitching for the Yanks in an elimination game against his hometown team, the Red Sox. Not only did he win the game, but he pitched a gem that will be remembered for a long time.
Schlittler threw eight shutout innings, struck out 12, and walked nobody. The Red Sox never sustained any particular rally during the entire game, which is even more surprising given how pesky of a team they are. They know how to scratch out runs, but Schlittler was having none of it on a Thursday night in the Bronx.
Yankees Finally Beat Boston Again
Yankee fans of any age might remember the last time the team defeated the Sox in a postseason series. That’s right, it was 2025, because you just watched it. However, the time before that was in 2003, when current Yankees manager Aaron Boone walked off Game 7 of the ALCS. In fact, since the 2004 ALCS choke, in which the Yanks lost four straight, Boston had gone on a stretch of nine-straight playoff wins over the Pinstripes. In that period, they won the 2004 ALCS, 2018 ALDS, and 2021 Wild Card Game, back when it was a single-elimination.
That particular monkey is now off of their backs, and they can focus on bigger and better.
Next Stop: ALDS
The Yankees now head to Toronto for Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday. This series will begin on Saturday, October 4 at 4pm Eastern. Game 2 will be on Sunday, October 5 at the same time.
Toronto played well against the Yankees for the most part, but this is a key series as the teams tied with the best record in the American League meet.
