CFB Top 50, #36: 2025 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

CFB Top 50, #36: 2025 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Coming down to number 36 on the CFB Top 50 list, we have the ACC’s 2025 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech opened last season with a very memorable Week 0 win against Florida State over in Ireland. While it did not propel the Jackets to a blockbuster ACC season, it showed that they could jump up and beat some good teams (not that Florida State turned out to be good, but anyway). Tech would also go on to beat Miami later in the season, and Duke turned out to be a credible win as well.

So, what does Brent Key’s team do for an encore? There is still room to grow in the ACC for Georgia Tech.

Best Game on the Schedule in 2025

November 28 vs. Georgia. Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate might well feature two good teams this year. We know Georgia will be good, and the Jackets are hoping that they are as well. This game is going to matter one way or another, but if the Jackets are playing for something in late November, then this will hit another gear. Did I mention that this game went to eight overtimes last season? Not sure how we top that, but I hope they’ll try.

2025 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: Outlook

The quarterback for the Jackets will once again be Haynes King, in his sixth and final year of college football. Since transferring from Texas Tech a few years ago, King has started 24 games for Georgia Tech, winning 14 and throwing 41 touchdowns against 18 interception. He has also rushed for 21 touchdowns over the past two seasons. Simply put, we know King can generate offense.

On paper, Georgia Tech looks respectable, and like they can follow the 2024 formula again of jumping up to beat some of their top competition. It will probably be enough to get them into a bowl game again, and maybe enough to ensure that they are playing some meaningful games at least into October. In several cases last year, Georgia Tech was close to a major breakthrough, but didn’t quite get there, which they hope they can rectify in 2025.

Georgia Tech’s Week 1 game at Colorado is potentially tough, then they get a gimme against Gardner-Webb, and then right into the frying pan against Clemson. Whereas some teams front-load their schedules with easy games, it will not take us long to know if the Jackets are actually any good this year.
