Sports Championships Won by City or Metro Area

Have you ever wondered about the tally of sports championships won by city or metro area?

Good thing Bracket Yard is here, because we added them all up and have the answers for you.  Here are the criteria which we observe:

  • The teams included are major professional sports leagues: MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, WNBA, and NWSL.  The PWHL is not included at this time as the league is in its third season as of 2025.
  • Championships include those in the World Series era of baseball, the Super Bowl era of football, and the Stanley Cup era of hockey.  The start dates for tracking each sport are as follows:
    • MLB: 1903 season
    • NFL: 1966 season
    • NBA: 1946-1947 season
    • NHL: 1915-1916 season
    • MLS: 1996 season
    • WNBA: 1997 season
    • NWSL: 2013 season
  • For men’s professional soccer, only the MLS Cup is counted; this does not include broader competitions such as the Leagues Cup.
  • If a team changed its name but did not move, the championships are counted under the current name (e.g. titles won under the Cleveland Indians are counted under the Cleveland Guardians).

The table below is arranged by major city or metropolitan area and in alphabetical order.  If there is a metro area not listed here, you can presume that it is at zero.

If a franchise has moved, the title is given to the city in which it was won.  For example, championships won by the Boston Braves are not counted under Atlanta, and Brooklyn Dodgers titles are counted under New York, not Los Angeles.
