2021 World Juniors Tournament

Here’s where we tell you all about the 2021 World Juniors Tournament.

It feels good just to see “2021” on things, as that can only mean one thing: 2020 is about to end. Maybe you are one of the few who had a great year, but most did not, and we’re bidding it adieu as soon as possible.

As for the World Juniors, they always start over the holidays and end in January. Some thought this annual tournament for under-20 hockey talent around the world would be scrubbed, but Canada is seeing to it that this party starts on time. That does not mean it isn’t without its modern-day challenges, however.

2021 World Juniors: The Info

Please note that Red Deer, Alberta, about two hours away, was supposed to be the co-host. However, due to the quarantine bubble, travel has been eliminated and the entire tournament will take place at one venue, Rogers Place, in Edmonton.

How The 2021 World Juniors Are Handling Covid

Like some professional sports leagues have done, players on the 10 participating teams have entered a competition bubble in Alberta. According to the IIHF, they tested everyone from players to officials and everyone in between. They came back with a total of ten positive tests, almost all from Germany and the rest from Sweden.

Those teams will quarantine, and in Germany’s case until right before the tournament begins. If one tests negative thereafter, they’re out of quarantine, but if not, it’s safe to say they’re missing some World Juniors action.

The 2021 World Juniors is the only IIHF competition this year. As a result, there will be no relegation round (there is nobody from the lower divisions to promote).

What Happened Last Time?

Hosted by Czechia, the 2020 World Juniors went to Team Canada over Russia in the Gold Medal Game. It was the 18th time that Canada has won the tournament.

The United States did not medal for the first time since 2015.

Playoff Round Notes

The preliminary round of the tournament, otherwise known as “Pool Play,” will take place between December 25 and 31, 2020. It will be followed by the playoff round to begin on January 2, 2021. The Gold and Bronze Medal Games will take place on January 5, 2021.
