2019 Outback Bowl: Pick

The word of the day is “defense.” To use it in a sentence: “The 2019 Outback Bowl will feature a lot of defense, and not a lot of offense.”

Whenever the Iowa Hawkeyes are involved, it feels like points will be at a premium. They held opponents to 20 or fewer points seven times during the regular season. Mississippi State can do better than that, however: the Bulldogs accomplished that on ten occasions. In fact, they held the opposition in the single-digits five times. There is no question that this is one of the nation’s best defenses, and putting Iowa and Mississippi State in competition means this will be a low-scoring game.

Neither offense is scary. Nick Fitzgerald does everything but catch his own passes for State, and while Nate Stanley has had a nice year for himself, the team in general is no more than average when it comes to running the football. Both schools know where their bread is buttered and it’s not when they are on offense.

This is likely to be a game where defense plays at a high level, so we will nod towards the one with the better unit.

Pick: Mississippi State
