2018 Quick Lane Bowl: Teams, Facts, and Pick
ACC-Big Ten bowl challenge.
From the place that brought you oil changes and tune-ups, it’s the 2018 Quick Lane Bowl. A little-known fact is that the winning team’s head coach gets a one-year supply of car wax and six free tire rotations (not really, that’s fake news).
In fact, the winning team gets a trophy. The Minnesota Golden Gophers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets assemble in Motown to try and get it. Which one gets the W and the bowl win for their Power Five conference?

2018 Quick Lane Bowl: Pick
If you are a fan of defense, this is not the football game for you. One who watches any college football whatsoever knows Georgia Tech’s schtick, which is the triple option. Translated, they are going to run the ball on 80 to 90 percent of snaps in the game. Tech has been very successful at it, and Minnesota needs to be ready for it.
The problem for the Golden Gophers is that they are not great at defending the run. Their run defense is 76th in FBS on the stats above, but here’s the number you need to know: 5.22 yards per carry allowed, which is 118th in the Bowl Subdivision. If you are concerned that Minnesota might get gashed on the ground and not be able to get off the field, you may be on to something. The Golden Gophers were also way worse at run defense away from home; though Ohio State skewed those numbers, they also played Big Ten lightweight Illinois and the thoroughly meh Nebraska and Maryland. Even in their surprising rout of Wisconsin, the Badgers managed 5.5 yards per carry. Georgia Tech averages 5.7, which leaves the potential for some long drives that devour clock.
Minnesota on offense is okay, but just okay. They were very inconsistent against the Big Ten and they do not have a big playmaker at quarterback. Freshman Tanner Morgan has taken over the duties under center but he has been up and down.
One wonders with it being Paul Johnson’s last game if the Rambling Wreck will have a little something extra in the tank. (Link: ESPN) They enter the bowl as the favorite to get him one last win, and it can happen.
Pick: Georgia Tech
