It’s still strange not to see Serena Williams representing the United States. Her sister, Venus, is holding course so far. This has been a rough week for the elder Williams sister, but her tennis game persists.

Kerber, Radwanska, Kuznetsova, Pliskova, Wozniacki, Cibulkova, Ostapenko, and Svitolina join Williams among the top-seeded women still alive. #11 Petra Kvitova’s loss in the second round to Madison Brengle was among the only notable women’s upsets so far. Elena Vesnina, the 15 seed, lost to Victoria Azarenka in the second round. Azarenka, of course, is a former world number one.
