NHL Playoff Bracket Update: The Series Aren’t Ending
No easy series wins for any teams in the NHL’s second round.
The latest look at the NHL playoff bracket shows that at least professional hockey is giving us something to watch.
A few of these series featured teams taking big early leads, but the second round persists. In fact, not one of these series has ended yet. All four have made it to at least Game 6.
NHL Playoff Bracket: May 7
NHL Playoff Bracket: Eastern Conference
Four teams have a 3-2 lead in their second-round NHL playoff series. They are Nashville, Anaheim, Ottawa, and Pittsburgh.
Ottawa began their series against the New York Rangers with a 2-0 lead, but let the Rangers take both games at Madison Square Garden. The Senators at home and on the road have been starkly different so far. New York gave away third period leads in all three losses in Ottawa. In Games 2 and 5, the Rangers surrendered the lead in the closing minutes to lose in overtime. On the other hand, the Rangers creamed Ottawa twice at MSG. They’ll have to do it again to force Game 7.
The other Eastern Conference series between Pittsburgh and Washington has been controlled by the Penguins. Washington needed to take Game 5 at home on Saturday just to send the series back to Pittsburgh. The Capitals are not known for deep playoff runs despite great regular seasons. This could be no different if the Pens slam the door at home in the next meeting.
NHL Playoff Bracket: Western Conference
On the Western side of the bracket, Edmonton is reeling. First, they started the series with a 2-0 lead. Winning both games in Anaheim gave them a major boost, but the Ducks then won both games in Alberta.
The game that may sink their season happened on Friday night. Edmonton had a 3-0 lead inside the final four minutes, but gave up three quickies to force overtime. Anaheim’s improbable double-overtime win in Game 5 puts them in a position to end the upstart Oilers’ season.
Finally, Nashville’s hot play continues, but they have yet to dismiss the Blues. The Preds had a chance on Friday, but St. Louis won Game 5 to keep their season alive. Nashville returns home to Tennessee this afternoon with a chance to end it.
