Upset-O-Meter: 2017 NCAA Tournament Day 2

[lead align=”default”]By the time 2017 NCAA Tournament Day 2 comes around, we will have already been through a day of madness.[/lead]

Hopefully, a few of the upsets we theorized came into being. If we’re lucky, maybe even a few games we didn’t think were potential upsets became them. The beauty of March basketball is that you never know what’s going to happen.

While you settle in for today’s second stint of Round of 64 action, we take a look at the sixteen games. We assign an “upset factor” to each game — this is a metric pulled from our hindquarters that is intended to show how likely the game is to be competitive or feature an upset. A higher ranking indicates that a contest is more likely to end in an upset relative to others. Pretty simple; if you can handle it, please continue.

2017 NCAA Tournament Day 2 Upset-O-Meter

[alert heading=”10 Oklahoma State vs. 7 Michigan (12:15pm ET, CBS)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]The Wolverines looked impressive and united in winning the Big Ten Tournament. While they have a good chance to win this game, Oklahoma State is a dangerous team. Upset Factor: 6/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”14 New Mexico State vs. 3 Baylor (12:40pm ET, TruTV)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]The Aggies are not as stout as the Bears (obviously) but do you trust Baylor right now? Baylor has a losing record over their last 11 games, granted against much better teams. Upset Factor: 3.5/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”9 Seton Hall vs. 8 Arkansas (1:30pm ET, TNT)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]Barely even worth mentioning because this wouldn’t be much of an upset. Flip a coin between these two. Upset Factor: 9/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”14 Iona vs. 3 Oregon (2pm ET, TBS)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]The injury to Chris Bouchard may screw Oregon out of national championship contention, but it shouldn’t screw them out of winning over Iona. Keep an eye out for the Gaels’ offense, which is the only thing that can keep them in it. They stink defensively, though.Upset Factor: 2.5/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”15 Jacksonville State vs. 2 Louisville (2:45pm ET, CBS)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]If the fourth-best team in the OVC this year can beat Louisville, the Cardinals weren’t really trying. Upset Factor: 2/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”11 USC vs. 6 SMU (3:10pm ET, TruTV)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]This regular-season rematch could go either way. USC won the first time. Upset Factor: 7/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”16 Texas Southern vs. 1 North Carolina (4pm ET, TNT)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]This is the sort of game where the Heels put up a century mark. Upset Factor: 1/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”11 Rhode Island vs. 6 Creighton (4:30pm ET, TBS)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]Creighton is a fine basketball team, but I love how Rhode Island is playing. The Rams can do it.Upset Factor: 8/10 [/alert]

[alert heading=”16 UC-Davis vs. 1 Kansas (6:50pm ET, TNT)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]Blowout. Upset Factor: 1/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”10 Wichita State vs. 7 Dayton (7:10pm ET, CBS)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]Wichita State is an underrated team. No disrespect to Dayton, another formidable mid-major, but the Shockers winning wouldn’t be a shock. Upset Factor: 8/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”15 Troy vs. 2 Duke (7:20pm ET, TBS)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]Duke has spit the bit as a two seed before, and just as it was then, it would be a surprise now. Upset Factor: 2.5/10 [/alert]

[alert heading=”11 Kansas State vs. 6 Cincinnati (7:27pm ET, TruTV)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]Cincy is a good team, but K-State can keep up with them. Upset Factor: 6/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”9 Michigan State vs. 8 Miami (9:20pm ET, TNT)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]Izzo in March. One would think they don’t want to go out early again this season. Upset Factor: 7/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”15 Northern Kentucky vs. 2 Kentucky (9:40pm ET, CBS)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]Kentucky’s only losses were to power conference teams. This would be a monumental upset. Upset Factor: 1.5/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”10 Marquette vs. 7 South Carolina (9:50pm ET, TBS)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]I see no reason Marquette can’t win this game, aside from it being a quasi-home game for South Carolina. Upset Factor: 6/10[/alert]

[alert heading=”14 Kent State vs. 3 UCLA (9:57pm ET, TruTV)” type=”alert-info” block=”false” close=”false”]Kent State’s defense probably won’t be enough to make this a game, even at the half. Upset Factor: 2/10[/alert]
