2017 SWAC Tournament Bracket
[lead align=”default”]Texas Southern has all year been their conference’s team to beat, but will they win the 2017 SWAC Tournament?[/lead]
This conference, composed of HBCUs (historically black colleges and universities), has some intrigue as an FCS football conference, but in basketball, we don’t hear much from them these days. Perhaps Texas Southern can be the team to change that, especially if they get off the 16 line. Before we can consider that, however, they have to win the SWAC.
2017 SWAC Tournament Bracket and Printable Bracket
The Tigers won 16 of their 18 conference contests this season. Because of their SWAC affiliation, their strength of schedule is very weak. Yet, their non-conference schedule was actually impressive, despite losing most games. Texas Southern played Louisville, Baylor, Arizona, Cincinnati, and TCU. If they make the dance, they’d face a team like Arizona or Louisville, if not them exactly.
While Texas Southern figures to be a 16, if another team wins, they definitely would be. Texas Southern’s RPI rank is about 100 better than the next-best school. This means anyone other than the Tigers winning the SWAC will go to Dayton.
The two losses for Texas Southern were Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State. Both are on the other side of the bracket and could only meet the Tigers in the finale.
Alabama State, the first opponent for Texas Southern, enters on a six-game losing streak. The Tigers are going the opposite direction: six-game winning streak.
