For a while this season, it appeared Cincinnati would be the team winning the regular-season title. As it turned out, this honor belonged to the Mustangs. Both schools are 26-4, and they’ll be in the dance. It may also be that SMU and Cincinnati will be the only two AAC teams within the field.

There is a belief that the Houston Cougars are moving towards the bubble. If that’s true, the bubble must be pretty bad, but we knew that already. They are currently the number three team in the conference, but one would think they need a good showing in the AAC. Houston’s RPI is in the 50s with a barely-acceptable strength of schedule, but they’ve only got two RPI Top 50 win. They also have three losses outside the Top 100. This is not a resume that would elicit consideration most years, but clearly, this isn’t most years.
No other team in this conference is going to make the grade, at least in terms of an at-large bid. Central Florida is hot, having won five straight, but unless they can knock out SMU en route to the conference title, they won’t get into the field.
