2017 Australian Open Update: Williams Squared
[lead align=”default”]Just as in the old days, it’s Serena vs. Venus WIlliams in the 2017 Australian Open women’s final.[/lead]
2017 Australian Open: Women’s Final
The two sisters have faced off 27 times in world tennis competition, with Serena Williams owning a 16-11 edge. Whichever lady wins the next one is a Grand Slam champion in 2017. It’s the first time since 2009 that they’ve met in a Grand Slam final, and the first time since 2003 that they’ve faced off at the Australian Open. Serena, the younger sister, won both.
These are two impressive tennis players, and that they’re sisters facing off on the biggest stage never fails to amaze. Between the two, the Williams sisters have 120 titles. Make that 121 by tomorrow.
2017 Australian Open: Men’s Final
Since we’re turning back the clock, it’ll be Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the Aussie Open finals on the men’s side.
This will be the 35th all-time meeting between the two competitors, with Nadal owning a commanding 23-11 edge. These two last met in Switzerland in the 2015 Basel final, with an Australian Open semi meeting in 2014. The 2017 Australian Open is their first Grand Slam final match since the Roland Garros/French Open in 2011. Before then, in the late 2000s, it seemed like they met in the finals somewhere several times a year.
Nadal and Federer may not be as young as they used to be, but they know each other quite well.
