Bowl Picks: 2016 Pinstripe Bowl

[lead align=”default”]Live from the Boogie Down comes the 2016 Pinstripe Bowl between Pittsburgh and Northwestern.[/lead]

The ACC and Big Ten hold their annual meeting in Da Bronx at Yankee Stadium, but it’s the first time for either school playing in this game. The Pinstripe Bowl began in 2010, and it hasn’t always been these two conferences, but the ACC comes in having won the last one.

That was then, and this is now. Northwestern started the season poorly, bounced back, and then had to fight to make a bowl. It looked like Pitt would make a bowl all along, but unlike Northwestern, the Panthers have a signature win: Clemson. That means nothing today, but is Pitt the better team, anyway?

2016 Pinstripe Bowl: Team Backgrounds

Pittsburgh Panthers
Atlantic Coast Conference
8-4 (5-3 ACC)
33rd bowl appearance in school history (13-19)
Best win: at Clemson, 43-42 on November 12
Worst loss: at Miami, 51-28 on November 5
One stat: RB James Conner has 1,060 rush yards entering this game

Northwestern Wildcats
Big Ten Conference
6-6 (5-4 Big Ten)
13th bowl appearance in school history (2-10)
Best win: at Iowa, 38-31 on October 1
Worst loss: vs. Illinois State, 9-7 on September 10
One stat: Averaging almost 37 ppg in wins, but only 13 ppg in losses

2016 Pinstripe Bowl: The Edge

Northwestern plays in a rough conference, but Pitt had their tough games, and they weathered (some of) them. Can’t argue with an 8-win season, and nobody has been a better story or a more inspiring player than James Conner.

His Panthers have a pretty good offense, but the Wildcats do not. It’s been a real struggle for Northwestern to score all season long, but their defense kept them in games. On the other hand, Pitt’s defense isn’t that good. This is one of those games where it’ll be good offense vs. good defense, and bad offense vs. bad defense. Let’s call this a draw.
