Bowl Picks: 2016 St Petersburg Bowl

[lead align=”default”]In the biggest point spread you’ll see all day, Miami-Ohio meets Mississippi State in the 2016 St Petersburg Bowl.[/lead]

Miami had to fight and claw their way to a bowl game, more than some other teams that got here. The RedHawks were 0-6 and needed to win out to get to bowl season. That is exactly what they did. Miami rides a six-game win streak into this game in St. Pete. Give them credit, because even playing a MAC schedule, that’s pretty hard to do.

Mississippi State got here on APR, or academic progress rate. They’re 5-7, so as you imagine, it wasn’t a great year in Starkville. Regardless, the Bulldogs can still win a bowl game. Even if they win, this won’t be a season for the record books, but they are bowling in season one post-Dak Prescott. Among the highlights were a win over Texas A&M, who at the time were in the top ten.

2016 St Petersburg Bowl: The Edge

On what planet would we consider taking a MAC team over an SEC team? This one, because the MAC team is much hotter and the SEC team has had its issues as well. Don’t tell Vegas that, though, because they have the Bulldogs as two-touchdown favorites.

In terms of talent, however, Mississippi State as an SEC school has more of it. That’s why they’re giving 14.5 points. This isn’t a question of who’s going to win, because it should probably be the Bulldogs if they know what’s good for them. Here, we ask if they’re going to lay those points. Perhaps the time off broke Miami’s momentum, but they clearly had much more of it than Mississippi State.
