2016-17 Bowl Standings: Not MAC-tastic

[lead align=”default”]The bowl standings so far in the 2016-17 bowl season feature all Group of Five conferences. Two of them stick out as having a good December.[/lead]

Conference USA is one of the big winners of bowl season to date. This league is 4-1 so far in its games, with teams like Western Kentucky and Southern Miss winning. Louisiana Tech and Old Dominion got theirs yesterday, with it being the first-ever bowl win for the Monarchs.

The Sun Belt is also having a nice run of things, also losing only once to date. Appalachian State, Troy, and Arkansas State are amongst its notable winners early in bowl season. Like Conference USA, they sit at 4-1 as the Group of Five portion nears its close.

2016-17 Bowl Standings: As of Christmas Eve

Conference Record Bowls Won
C-USA 4-1 New Orleans, Boca Raton, Bahamas, Armed Forces
Sun Belt 4-1 Camellia, Cure, Famous Idaho Potato, Dollar General
Ind. 1-0 Poinsettia
MWC 2-2 New Mexico, Las Vegas
AAC 1-4 Miami Beach
MAC 0-4
ACC 0-0
Big Ten 0-0
Big 12 0-0
Pac-12 0-0
SEC 0-0

None of the big boy leagues have started up yet, but that changes on “Boxing Day” with four power conference teams kicking off. After that point, we’ll be able to see which of them is having a bad time in the bowl standings.

Until then, we see the MAC at 0-4 so far, losing with Toledo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, and Ohio. In the case of the most former and most latter, those were two of their best teams. It’s probably going to be up to Western Michigan to save the conference. This is a group that went 3-4 last season, and now, 2-4 is the best they can do.

The American Athletic Conference is also having a lousy December. They’re 1-4 with their sole win coming in the Miami Beach Bowl thanks to Tulsa.
