Bowl Picks: 2016 Poinsettia Bowl

[lead align=”default”]Bowl season rolls on tomorrow with the playing of the 2016 Poinsettia Bowl down in mild San Diego.[/lead]

At Qualcomm Stadium on Wednesday night, it’s the BYU Cougars and the Wyoming Cowboys for Western supremacy. Both teams had good years, with Wyoming being a division champion and BYU the best independent team (by a mile) at 8-4.

You can’t say enough about the job Craig Bohl has done at Wyoming. The man who started the North Dakota State dynasty inherited a pretty lousy program and has it winning. It remains to be seen if he can keep it winning, but for now, Bohl has his Cowboys playing well.

BYU, on the other hand, has a first-year coach in alumnus Kalani Sitake. Unlike Bohl, he took over a program in good shape before his arrival, but he’s kept it there so far.

2016 Poinsettia Bowl: The Edge

BYU is a strong favorite in this game. One possible reason is that the Cougars are hot while Wyoming is not. Brigham Young has won four in a row — granted against crappy teams — while Wyoming has lost three of four, one of which was a rout. Still, not quite enough to affect such a big spread.

BYU’s calling card is its defense, allowing under 20 points per game. It’s more than a little better than Wyoming’s, which ranks among the nation’s worst. The Cougars are also remarkably consistent, not getting blown out in a single game. Wyoming has been competitive with most of the good teams they’ve seen, but that might not be enough to suggest they’ll win. Perhaps they’ll cover, though, because BYU quarterback Taysom Hill is out.
