Bowl Picks: 2016 New Orleans Bowl

[lead align=”default”]Late in the evening on the first day of bowl season comes the 2016 New Orleans Bowl, with a fully Southern flavor.[/lead]

In a battle of 6-6 teams, the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles meet with the ULL Ragin’ Cajuns. It’s about as local a bowl game as you can get for either team, so hopefully, there will be a nice turnout from both schools.

Southern Miss looked destined for a bowl game from the early going, starting the season 2-0 and then 4-1. The middle and the end wasn’t too favorable for the Golden Eagles, however. Between October and November, Southern Miss lost five of six but rallied in their final game to become bowl eligible.

The Ragin’ Cajuns were heading in the opposite direction earlier in the season, getting off to a 2-3 start and, by November 19, needing two wins to make a bowl. Lafayette got those wins and qualified at 6-6.

Who covers the spread in this game by the Gulf?

2016 New Orleans Bowl: The Edge

Southern Miss is probably the better team in this game, but the Ragin’ Cajuns have done very well in this bowl game (and they’ve played in it many times). Too bad a couple of them got vacated.

The Golden Eagles have a good offense, at least by C-USA standards, and it’s much better than the one ULL is running out there. If this turns into a slugfest, you’d have to think it’s Southern Miss pulling away. Yet, ULL has beaten better teams than Southern Miss. Look for a close one here.
