College Football Rankings
2017 College Football Rankings: #11
Central Florida Knights (AAC) |
Previous UCF rankings: NR, NR, NR, NR, 25, 21, 19, 17, 14, 12, 12, and 12.
What does it profit a team to do really well and then lose their stud coach to a flailing Power 5 school? Victory is but a fleeting thing.
Previous commentary 11/19/17: UCF’s big-ass showdown with South Florida is on deck.
Previous commentary 11/12/17: Assuming they fight off South Florida and Memphis, they could go Cotton Bowling.
Previous commentary 11/5/17: UCF is running away with the top spot among the Group of Five like Western Michigan did last season.
2017 College Football Rankings: #12
Penn State Nittany Lions (Big Ten) |
Previous PSU rankings: 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 3, 3, 3, 6, 16, 14, and 13.
Decimating Maryland doesn’t have the same cache it had back in, er, never mind.
Previous commentary 11/19/17: So, Nebraska scored a bunch of points: the Nittany Lions scored more.
Previous commentary 11/12/17: Order is restored by beating Rutgers, though it’s Rutgers. Penn State already lost two entirely critical games.
Previous commentary 11/5/17: Not a lot of points separate the Nittany Lions from 9-0. Yet, at two losses, they’re probably finished.
2017 College Football Rankings: #13
Washington Huskies (Pac-12) |
Previous WASH rankings: 7, 6, 6, 6, 5, 4, 10, 9, 8, 9, 15, and 14.
The Huskies aren’t playing for a Pac-12 title, but at least they know they massively outplayed Washington State.
Previous commentary 11/19/17: We’re being a lot nicer to the Huskies than the committee. To be fair, Washington was lucky to pull out the game against Utah.
Previous commentary 11/12/17: When Washington went down, so did any slim hopes the Pac-12 had of a playoff team.
Previous commentary 11/5/17: Washington didn’t drop because of anything they did wrong. Getting Miami and Notre Dame in front of them where they belong pushed some teams backwards.
2017 College Football Rankings: #14
Stanford Cardinal (Pac-12) |
Previous STAN rankings: 14, 21, NR, NR, NR, 20, 21, 20, 23, NR, 24, 22, and 22.
Despite some early inconsistency, the real Stanford finally showed up. You could say we’re showing them some “Love.”
Previous commentary 11/19/17: If not for Bryce Love, Stanford probably drops out of the rankings again. Another close call with Cal.
Previous commentary 11/12/17: It’s been a love-hate relationship between Stanford and the rankings, but here they are, back in. About time they beat a ranked team.
2017 College Football Rankings: #15
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Ind) |
Previous ND rankings: NR, NR, NR, NR, 24, 19, 18, 12, 10, 3, 8, and 8.
The Irish were finished before, but now they’re far beyond finished.
Previous commentary 11/19/17: Navy gave the Irish a game, but even with the win, it doesn’t matter. Nobody else faltered this weekend, and they have one game left with no championship. They’re playing for a New Year’s Six bowl.
Previous commentary 11/12/17: Navy and Stanford are their last two games, and then they have to watch other teams play for conference titles. Done.
Previous commentary 11/5/17: Notre Dame continues navigating their tough schedule. Cue the people wondering if their not playing for a conference title will screw them in the final week.
2017 College Football Rankings: #16
Memphis Tigers (AAC) |
Previous MEM rankings: NR, NR, NR, NR, NR, NR, NR, 24, 20, 18, and 16.
Memphis done put a basketball score on ECU.
Previous commentary 11/19/17: Memphis dropped 66 on the Ponies to win the division. They still have a shot at a New Year’s Six bid, namely through winning out. It will be harder than it sounds.
Previous commentary 11/12/17: SMU on November 18 is a tough game for the Tigers, but if they weather that, ECU should be a layup. How nice would a 12-0 vs. 11-1 American title game be?
Previous commentary 11/5/17: Memphis took care of business in Tulsa, and SMU is their last big test of the regular season.
2017 College Football Rankings: #17
Michigan State Spartans (Big Ten) |
Previous MSU rankings: NR, NR, NR, NR, NR, 22, 20, NR, 15, 17, and 17.
Michigan State won decisively in the midst of the great Piscataway Bathroom Crisis of 2017.
Previous commentary 11/19/17: Somehow, Michigan start found a way to win a game in which the quarterback completed two passes.
Previous commentary 11/12/17: Ohio State just wanted it more. A lot more, in fact.
Previous commentary 11/5/17: Had they beaten anyone else, they would still be ranked, but not 15th. Being a Power Five two-loss team in a crazy season means a big increase for Sparty.
2017 College Football Rankings: #18
Oklahoma State Cowboys (Big 12) |
Previous OKST rankings: 8, 7, 7, 13, 13, 12, 12, 11, 9, 14, 13, and 18.
Oklahoma State beat Kansas up, but they blew it all last week when it mattered more.
Previous commentary 11/19/17: If you just saw the score, you’d think it was a tight game all the way. No, because Kansas State kicked the Pokes’ asses for the most part.
Previous commentary 11/12/17: Gutsy win by the Pokes up in Ames. For a team that looks like it can’t play defense, they came up with a big play in the end zone to cap it.
Previous commentary 11/5/17: Losing a Bedlam slugfest all but ended their hopes of a College Football Playoff bid.
2017 College Football Rankings: #19
LSU Tigers (SEC) |
Previous LSU rankings: 12, 12, NR, NR, 25, NR, 22, 21, 17, NR, 23, and 21.
Coach O will get this team to a nice first-tier SEC bowl.
Previous commentary 11/19/17: Like Tennessee was going to beat them.
Previous commentary 11/12/17: Since getting embarrassed by Troy, LSU has only lost to Alabama in their last five games.
Previous commentary 10/29/17: The best bye weeks are the ones where you move up four spots for doing nothing.
2017 College Football Rankings: #15
Washington State Cougars (Pac-12) |
Previous WSU rankings: 21, 17, 15, 15, 9, 7, 14, 13, 19, 18, 16, and 15.
It doesn’t matter where the Apple Cup is played: Washington State never seems to come ready.
Previous commentary 11/19/17: It all comes down to the Apple Cup, but only for Wazzu in the Pac-12 North.
Previous commentary 11/12/17: Washington State remains a possibility to win the Pac-12 championship. It won’t get them in the playoff, as that ship has sailed, but the Fiesta Bowl (or similar) is not out of the question.
Previous commentary 11/5/17: And they follow their bad loss with a nice win over Stanford. Shrug.
