NHL Playoff Predictions 2018: Consensus Picks
Rounding up the picks.
We made our own NHL playoff predictions 2018 on our big’ ol bracket page, but who does everybody else think will win the Stanley Cup? It matters to some, and apparently us.
The picks have been rounded up from across the internet, and we will give you the first round picks of the sports media, as well as the consensus Stanley Cup champion for 2018.
First, the data sources for this piece:
- ESPN.com and their picks article.
- USA Today and their columnists.
- A variety of writers and analysts at NHL.com.
- Steve Silverman of Bleacher Report.

NHL Playoff Predictions 2018: Washington Capitals vs. Columbus Blue Jackets
The Metropolitan Division champions have the advantage in this series, but for a first-place team, there is plenty of dissent in the ranks. Washington has a reputation they need to shake. So does Columbus: the Jackets have never won a playoff series.
NHL Playoff Predictions 2018: Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Philadelphia Flyers
It’s all Pennsylvania in this matchup, and the defending Cup champions are heavy favorites. Philadelphia has not advanced in the playoffs since they beat the Pens in the first round in 2012.
NHL Playoff Predictions 2018: Boston Bruins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
Boston will have a fight on their hands in the Atlantic semifinals. Toronto is one of the most prolific offensive teams in the National Hockey League; Boston is near the top defensively.
NHL Playoff Predictions 2018: Tampa Bay Lightning vs. New Jersey Devils
Few give the wild card Devils a chance in this series against the Atlantic Division champions and Eastern Conference’s top seed. Here’s a fun fact, however: the Bolts lost all three regular season meetings with just one point among them.
NHL Playoff Predictions 2018: Nashville Predators vs. Colorado Avalanche
The only clean sweep in our eight first-round series is in Nashville. Winning a President’s Trophy means nothing now, but some feel this is the team of destiny in 2018.
NHL Playoff Predictions 2018: Winnipeg Jets vs. Minnesota Wild
Winnipeg is a near-unanimous pick to take out the Minnesota Wild. Minnesota has won two playoff series since the lockout, which is two more than the Jets have since they were forged out of the Atlanta Thrashers.
NHL Playoff Predictions 2018: Anaheim Ducks vs. San Jose Sharks
The two Pacific series are close calls. Here, the Sharks are slight favorites to nip the Ducks. It would hardly be an upset, as only one point separated the two teams.
NHL Playoff Predictions 2018: Vegas Golden Knights vs. Los Angeles Kings
Vegas has to be extremely proud of making the playoffs in their first season of existence. The sports pundits are not with them, however, with a slim majority siding with the Kings.
NHL Playoff Predictions 2018: Consensus Stanley Cup Champion
A majority of those making picks in the above articles chose the Nashville Predators to win it all. The second-most selected team was Tampa Bay, who were the choice of just 19 percent.
